Paul Ryan and Volkswagen. Who knew?

Greens wanted a low polluting car with high mileage. They get the VW diesel. As I have written before, I am a car crazy person. And for the longest time I have puzzled over why people buy diesel. In particular in Europe. I think diesel stinks. Both in reality and as a fuel. Even before the lying by Volkswagen I was mentally questioning their use of the phrase “clean diesel.” There is no such thing as “clean diesel” any more than there is something called the “safe cigarette.” I believe there is much more to come from this story. Not just about VW cars, but all diesel cars. When a diesel is cold, it pollutes a lot. When its at idle it pollutes a lot. When it gets old. It pollutes a lot. Currently VW says the software installed in the cars to cheat emissions affects approximately 11m vehicles. My guess is that number will go much higher. After all. if it works in one car, why not use it in others? Its only a matter of time before the other shoe drops. The same is true of the GOP fight over who should be the next Speaker of the House. Currently it seems to be Paul Ryans to lose. Sure some hard core nutters don’t want him, but most GOP house members do. But again, be careful what you wish for. While Ryan seems like a solution to a problem of the GOP’s own making, if he compromises with Democrats then he loses credibility with the so called “party base.” Which may affect his chances for running for president one day. If he sticks to the outlandish ideas of a few members of the GOP, the GOP will essentially shut down. Its only a matter of time before the other shoe drops.   Next time. My visit to Saudi Arabia.
